Lawrence started teaching piano with just a couple of students while employed as a high school science teacher in Leaf Rapids in northern Manitoba. The chance to focus on one student at a time and to come up with creative ways to help them learn was extremely satisfying. When the mine in Leaf Rapids closed a few years later he saw it as an opportunity to switch to music and restart teaching on his own terms. He is also a regular member of the Manitoba Opera Chorus.
